I'd love to find more shows from the '60s that are downloadable, and I'm hoping the way-more-knowledgeable-than-me folks here might have some good tips ... Such an amazing era, but so much of it is only streaming.

Purple Gel, that was such a helpful post on the other thread about searching DeadBase. What a fun toy. It doesn't seem to be comprehensive; I was searching for Viola Lee Blues in '68, and it didn't turn up Lake Tahoe, which is on DP 22. But boy, it sure makes searching easier!!!

Easy enough to find on your own. Just sort by date and have fun exploring...

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3AGratefulDead%20-%2Fmetadata%2Fstream_only%3A%281%29&;sort=-date&page=71

3/30/68 is very good, but 3/29/68 is even better...

A phenomenal Violas was performed on 3/3/68 and it might be the very first audience recording (dont mind the fire alarm going off in the background)...

And a fantastic stage recorded performance from 1969 that sounds as good or better than a quality soundboard...

"so much of it is only streaming"

You have all the answers you need. If only you had the TOOLS. It would give you many OPTIONS for all sorts of SETTINGS (if past history proves anything). I guess it takes a different VIEW of understanding. Yes, stream only shows can be such a DRAG. I hope this doesn't DROP your enjoyment of this web site.

cliff:

i actually did a little hunting on my own thinking about althea's question to rationalize spending even more time on this website when i stumbled upon that 5/3/69 aud...such an amazing tape! stage mics would make sense b/c the drummers and esp. lesh are remarkably clear and present in the mix, something that is usually hard to hear on those '60s tapes. the vocals are low in the mix but still quite audible and hardly a problem for someone like me. and the show itself (or fragment i guess) is very nice.

i will have to listen to 3/29/68 now too since i do love 3/30...

Go for some official releases. Their good shows, with good sound, for a little bit of money.

Dick's Picks, Vol. 22, Grateful Dead, 2001 - Feb 22-24, 1968

Road Trips: Vol 2, No 2: Feb 14, 1968, Carousel, Grateful Dead, 2009 - Feb 14, 1968

Download Series Vol. 6: 3/17/68, Grateful Dead, 2005 - March 17, 1968

... Those are the official releases from just 1968 that are complete shows. You can do more perusing here...

Thanks -- I knew there'd be lots of good ideas. On etree: I can't figure that out in the least. I'm definitely not tech savvy. But eventually the light may dawn ... occasionally I do learn new tricks :-)

I'm not particularly tech savvy either. Bitoorent is actually pretty easy.Once you do it the first time, it's all down hill from there. Ask lots of questions. We're kinda like Home Depot for file sharing.

You can do it!! We can help!!

you may need to download a torrent program like bittorrent or utorrent if you don't have one already; their usually free.

just do a search in etree for a show date/year, and then find a show you want in the list. click the link, then click the link in the 'torrent' field again to dl the show. if you have a torrent program your comp. should prompt you to dl the show automatically...
